Think Tank Potluck THIS SATURDAY

In the last few weeks I have done nothing other than focus on the monstrosity that is now Greenpoint Food Market. This article resulted in the biggest shitshow in my entire life with phone calls being fielded between Dept of Health, Dept of Agriculture & Markets, leeching journalists and confused and disappointed vendors. This is by far the biggest challenge I’ve ever faced and one that equally mixes gratification and disease. I have literally come down with some ridiculous illness where my voice has left and in its place are pathetic wheezes.  I am now feeling some serious growing pains. I now know there are some serious consequences to my actions. Not to say I am an immature, irresponsible jokey clueless kid. I know there are folks out there who think this way towards me and my market and where you might not be wholly correct you are deceived by my ever cool nonchalance. Do not be mistaken, I do regret never having done enough research to legitimize the market, which is now suffering under health dept scrutiny and all the vendors and fans that have accumulated over the months are left angry, disappointed, confused, and supportive by default. I’ve made such a shitshow out of the situation and I can only pray everything gets smoothed out in the end.

I HAVE been getting support from friends, vendors, fans, and others and I am very grateful for the all knowledge and resource they are able to provide. The temporary canceling of the market and the hosting of this Think Tank Potluck conference in its place just proves the market has stirred something that goes well beyond a dinky little community oriented food market. The personal gets political here for sure.

I’m nervous as hell about moderating and public speaking and am determined to wear heels if it makes be feel that much more at ease. We will be discussing many a things related to the local food movement, small business opportunities, incubator kitchens, and the future of Greenpoint Food Market. It’s been hell of a ride, I hope you’ll join me this Saturday.

Greenpoint Food Market: Spring Awakening: April 10th

I am both dreading and anticipating the next food market. It’s growing ever so gradually every month and we will have more vendors this time around than we can fit. We’ll figure it out somehow but I’m scared. Very scared. Either way, please do spread the word, bring your friends and lovers. Announcement below, read the full list of vendors here.

Greetings friends of Greenpoint Food Market!

We hope you are staying high and dry during Spring’s glorious love showers and celebrating the season for renewal, growth, and life.

April 10th, we will present the next market with uncontainable excitement as we present SPRING AWAKENING. Join us for a hippiefied day of flowers, patchouli, butterflies and eat some vegan granola bars!

This just might be our BIGGEST market day yet, the church will be PACKED with all sorts of goodies from ice cream to pork buns, vegan pate to bacon marmalade. People’s Champs will be performing between 2 – 3pm, mixing jazz, soul, funk, hip-hop, dub and samba to create new hybrids. Fellow Greenpointer Cowboy Mark will be at the makeshift dj booth pumpin’ some beats.

It is PIVOTAL that we see you at GFM on April 10th. We thrive on your curiosity, your hunger, your tastebuds, and your support. Please go on and SPREAD the love to all your friends and family. Join our FACEBOOK group if you haven’t done so already, an event invite has been set up there as well.

Thank you and see you then!

A Few Things Up My Sleeve

I’ve been scheming my ass off the last couple days, brainstorming and planning a few events. I hope you can join me in all:

First and foremost:

Greenpoint Food Market returns February 13th. It will be a love day extravaganza with enough hearts installed to keep you nauseous for days. There will be aphrodisiac inspired treats, a secret foodmirer bulletin board, and a kissing photo booth courtesy Color Me Katie and my dearest Hyla. Also performance by Rifle Recoil and music provided by dj Jimmy T. I am very excited.

Then on the following day is another love day inspired event. Greenpoint Girls Group‘s FUCK LOVE BRUNCH AFFAIR. I really like the invite I made, which is just paper I held with my mouth whilst sticking up my finger and forming a heart on photobooth. All you Greenpoint Ladies, single or tied, come forth and let’s celebrate the death of love. just kidding…

And finally, I am very proud to present Work It Brooklyn. My dearest Aja originally thought of this event where freelance creative types in North Brooklyn would get together and share their skills and contacts for potential gigs and collaborations and healthy competitions. She brought me along and I brought dearest Briana along and we made this baby called Work It Brooklyn to happen February 24th at the Arsenal. There will be stations pertaining to your field (art, dance, graphic design, etc) as well as speed networking (like speed dating but productive and less awkward). It’ll be fun, join us. Add us to your facebook groups too.

Fundraiser for Learning Farm in Java, Indonesia this THURSDAY

Cori

My dear Cori is organizing a fundraiser for Learning Farm, a non-profit school and farm in Java, Indoesia. Learning Farm serves the community by providing non-formal education for local youths while practicing organic farming techniques. The fundraiser will benefit Learning Farm and present talks and demonstrations from leading figures in the agricultural urban food movement. I don’t know that I’m qualified to participate from such an esteemed group (Rooftop Farm, Brooklyn Honey, Brooklyn Brine) but I’ll be there representing Greenpoint Food Market and talk nonsense. There’ll be food, music and other goodies to find. Be there!

Greenpoint Food Market Launch This SATURDAY!!!!!!

It’s happening folks. Greenpoint Food Market launches this Saturday from Noon – 6pm.

I’m nervous as hell but have NO DOUBT it will KICK ASS and people will LOVE IT. Repeating this in my head helps ease the nervous tick and the nightmares.

Without further ado:

GFM_POSTER_72

We are SUPER excited to inaugurate the weekly food market this Saturday inside the Church of Messiah located at 129 Russell Street between Nassau and Driggs Ave in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.

GFM started as a nagging daydream about a market exclusively serving food lovingly produced by locals. It is a response to a burgeoning culinary movement where DIY, artisanal, and traditional methods of food-making is short of becoming normalized in Brooklyn and beyond. GFM hopes to be a support system for explorative amateur chefs and gourmands wishing to share their goods with the community and maybe even make a buck or two along the way. GFM is all about community involvement and gastronomical gratification, bringing folks together through food appreciation.

The market will be an all-encompassing sensory experience where visitors can walk from table to table sampling the goods while listening to live music and marveling at the artwork installed throughout the space, all referencing food. The convergence of art and food will not only instill potential chaos in a cozy space but also foster a unique experience utilizing all senses for savory consumption.

The market will feature a little over 30 vendors sharing tables to bring variety and community essence into the space. Hungry and curious patrons will be treated to an array of homemade goods including:

Mini pies by Py-O-My

Jam by Anarchy in a Jar

Pickles by Brooklyn Brine

Kombucha by Kombucha Brooklyn

Honey by Brooklyn Honey

Kimchee by Mama O’s

Chocolate by Taza Chocolate

Cookies by Sugarbuilt

Soup by The Soup Spoon

Soda by Pumpkin & Honeybunny

A performance involving angel cake and deviled eggs by artist Hein Koh

A bake sale residency by Sweet Tooth of the Tiger

The launch of Food + Sex magazine

Custom made tote bags by Christine Cotter

The market will also feature vegan and gluten-free baked goods, beer poached bratwurst, cocktail syrup, mini tarts and bundt cakes, herb garni, boiled peanuts, granola and coconut macaroons. These specialty prepared foods will be offered and packaged to take home or enjoy at McGolrick Park across the street.

We’d love to see you at Greenpoint Food Market. Your attendance not only supports local food production and distribution but harbors community support through sustainable practices in and out of the kitchen.

There’s always room for more vendors, if you’d like to join, just shoot us an email!

Open Studios and Food Market

I will be spending the next month grueling over the computer organizing two projects I’ve dreamed of putting together the last few months. Both takes places in Greenpoint, a neighborhood I am becoming more and more embedded in.

First is

Greenpoint Open Studios to happen Sept 18-20 in collaboration of Gnpt artists, galleries, local businesses and everyone else in between.

Second is

Greenpoint Food Market to launch Sept 12 in collaboration with local artisnal food makers selling their goods inside a church every Saturday alongside live music and art installed.

Spread the word.

O, and I’ve been hired to write for Greenpoint Gazette. Look out for articles on bees and ice cream.
